The UK–China Culture & Education Exchange Centre invited British pianist Gordon Fergus-Thompson, Professor of Piano at the Royal College of Music in London, to Guangzhou for a programme of musical exchange and one-to-one piano masterclasses at Wanming Piano Store. The event gave young pianists, including those preparing for ABRSM examinations, an opportunity to learn directly from an internationally respected performer and teacher.
Renowned for his interpretations of French Impressionist and Russian Romantic piano music, Gordon Fergus-Thompson has earned critical acclaim across Europe. He became a professor at the Royal College of Music in 1996 and was awarded Fellowship of the College (FRCM) in 2010. His international teaching activities have included masterclasses in the United States and Australia, alongside classes and lectures in the UK. He has also been invited to teach at Lang Lang Music World.
Each young performer received individual guidance, while other participants could observe and learn from the lessons. Professor Fergus-Thompson listened closely to the students, offered practical advice on piano technique and musical interpretation, and answered questions about performance and musical training. His own demonstrations allowed students to hear how artistic ideas could be brought to life at the keyboard.
The programme offered selected outstanding students the opportunity to receive personal recommendation letters from the professor in support of applications to leading European conservatoires. Such recommendations were intended to recognise their achievements and potential as developing musicians.
A music appreciation session explored French Impressionist and Russian Romantic piano repertoire. Through explanation and demonstration, the professor encouraged students to listen more closely, develop their artistic understanding and explore the expressive possibilities of music.
The programme also included guidance on ABRSM piano examinations, covering the assessment framework, scales and arpeggios, the three prepared pieces, sight-reading and aural tests. Students had the opportunity to discuss preparation and performance skills with the professor.
The masterclass brought students into close contact with an experienced international artist and educator. Participants valued the chance to ask questions, hear demonstrations and receive individual feedback, and expressed enthusiasm for further opportunities to learn face to face with leading musicians.
